Saying “I’m Sorry”
Let’s start with something a little funny—and a little scientific.
Have you ever burped? (Of course you have!) Scientists even have a fancy word for it: eructation. Most people burp anywhere from 6 to 20 times a day.
So why does it happen?
When you eat, drink, chew gum, or even talk really fast, you swallow air. That air collects in your stomach, and eventually your body pushes it back out—sometimes with a loud rumble!
Drinking fizzy sodas or eating too quickly can make even more air bubbles.
People aren’t the only ones who burp—animals do too! Cows burp a lot. In fact, scientists say that the gas from just ten cows’ burps in one year could heat a house for a whole year. That’s a lot of burping!
Most of the time, if a burp slips out, we say “Excuse me.” That’s our way of apologizing.
But burping isn’t the only time we should say we’re sorry.
Anytime we realize we’ve hurt someone’s feelings—on purpose or by accident—it’s important to apologize, ask for forgiveness, and try to do better next time.
The same thing is true with God.
When we do or say things that hurt God or go against His ways, the Bible calls that sin. God wants us to tell Him we’re sorry and ask for His forgiveness. And here’s the good news—God always forgives us when we come to Him with honest hearts.
Saying “I’m sorry” helps fix relationships—with people and with God.
Let’s Pray Together
Father God, when we hurt others, help our hearts be quick to say we’re sorry. And when we do things that hurt You, help us come to You right away and ask for forgiveness. Teach us to honor You with our words and actions. We love You. Amen.
