The Greatest Treasure

Adapted from the book
How Great is Our God
by Louie Giglio

Good morning!

Today’s Scripture is:

“Cry out for wisdom.
Beg for understanding.
Search for it as you would for silver.
Hunt for it like hidden treasure.
Then you will understand what it means to respect the Lord.
Then you will begin to know God.”
Proverbs 2:3–5 (ICB)

The Greatest Treasure

Our Bible verse today tells us to look for wisdom the same way people search for treasure.

Have you ever heard of the California Gold Rush? Between 1848 and 1855, news about gold caused more than 300,000 people to hurry west, hoping to get rich. Many miners searched for gold by panning. They scooped dirt, gravel, and water into a pan and shook it back and forth. The heavy gold would sink to the bottom, where they could collect it.

A few miners found real gold—but many were tricked.

Some shiny rocks looked like gold but weren’t valuable at all. These rocks were called pyrite, or fool’s gold. Fool’s gold sparkles and shines, but real gold actually looks more dull. Real gold is soft—if you hit it with a hammer, it flattens. Fool’s gold is hard and gives off sparks. And here’s something funny—real gold has no smell, but fool’s gold smells terrible, like rotten eggs!

Many people thought they had discovered a great treasure, only to find out they were holding a shiny, smelly, worthless rock.

That’s a lot like the treasures people chase today.

Things in this world can look exciting and important, and it’s easy to run after them. But when you compare them to the real treasure, they don’t last—and they don’t truly satisfy.

So, what is the real treasure?

Knowing God.

God is the greatest treasure of all. And the wonderful thing is, you don’t have to dig in the dirt to find Him. You can find Him by opening your Bible, talking to Him in prayer, and learning more about who He is. God is always near, ready to be found by those who seek Him.

Let’s Pray Together

Father God, when we feel tempted to chase after the things of this world, help us remember that You are the greatest treasure of all. We want to spend our lives getting to know You more. We love You. Amen.

Today’s Question:

What is one way you can look for God today—through prayer, reading your Bible, or helping someone else?
