The 23rd Psalm (Part 4)

Good morning!

Why did the little sheep bring a flashlight to church?

Let’s continue on with looking at the very famous 23rd Psalm.
Today’s Scripture is
The Lord is my shepherd I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness
for His namesake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil
for You are with me.
Your rod and Your staff,
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil
and my cup overflows.
Surely, goodness, and mercy will follow me
all the days of my life
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
—Psalm 23
Let’s take a closer look at what the highlighted part of the psalm means.
First, let me point out something I had never noticed before. David, the writer of this psalm, stops referring to God as “He” and starts talking directly to Him as “You” Isn’t that interesting?
It’s as if David is drawn even closer to God as he writes. His words become more personal, like he’s sitting right beside God and talking with Him.
David reminds himself—and us—that even when bad things happen (and they do), he chooses not to be afraid because God is with him.
Then David talks about the shepherd’s rod and staff. A shepherd used these tools to protect his sheep from wolves and other dangerous animals. When I think of a rod or a staff, I don’t usually think of comfort. They sound more like something that could hurt! But a shepherd didn’t carry them to harm the sheep. He carried them to protect, guide, and rescue them.
Sometimes, when we wander away from God or choose to disobey, He lovingly corrects us. I learned a long time ago that I have two choices. I can make the right choice the first time, or I can learn the hard way after facing the consequences of a bad choice.
Isn’t it wonderful that God loves us so much that He cares enough to guide us back to the right path? Let’s ask Him to help us make wise choices the first time!

Father God, our Good Shepherd, thank You for always being with us and for lovingly guiding us. Help us to make wise choices the first time so we can follow the path You have for us. Thank You for protecting us and loving us so much. We love You! Amen.
