Hibernating
Adapted from the book
How Great is Our God
by Louie Giglio
Good morning!
Joke of the Day:
Why did the sleepy student bring a ladder to bed?
Because they wanted to reach their dreams!
Today’s Scripture is:
“Keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.”
—Matthew 24:42 (NIV)
Hibernating
Have you ever snuggled under warm covers on a cold day and taken a long nap? Someone might
joke and say you’re “hibernating” … but that’s not quite true!
Hibernation is very different from a nap. It’s something some animals do to stay alive during the
winter. When it gets really cold and food is hard to find, animals have two choices:
They can move somewhere warmer (that’s called migration), or
they can stay put and hibernate.
Animals like ground squirrels curl up in a safe spot and barely move at all until spring. Others,
like bears and skunks, wake up every now and then go for a little walk or snack.
But here’s the thing—people aren’t meant to hibernate!
Sometimes life can feel “cold”—not because of the weather, but because things get hard. On
those days, it might feel easier to just hide away and do nothing. But God has given us an
important job!
Jesus told us to go out into the world and tell others about Him (Matthew 28:19–20). There are
so many people who don’t know how much Jesus loves them. That means there’s no time for
“hibernating” in our faith!
Instead, we can:
Do something kind
Say something encouraging
Help someone in need
Every small action shows God’s love to others. The Bible also reminds us to use our time wisely
(Ephesians 5:16). Each day is a chance to shine for Jesus!
So instead of “sleeping through” life, let’s stay awake and ready—loving others and pointing
them to Him.
Let’s Pray Together
Dear God, I know that one day Jesus will come back. Help me be ready. Help me
live in a way that shows others Your love and makes them want to know You too. We love You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
