Treating Others

Adapted from the book
How Great is Our God
by Louie Giglio

Good morning!

Today’s Scripture is:

“Do not do wrong to a person to pay him back for doing wrong to you.
And do not insult someone to pay him back for insulting you.
But ask God to bless that person. Do this because you yourselves
were called to receive a blessing.”

1 Peter 3:9 (ICB)

The Hiccup Mystery

Did you know elephants hiccup?

So do dogs, lions, and porcupines!

Actually, all mammals hiccup. But people do it more often, and babies do it the most of all.

Babies even hiccup before they’re born!

Hiccups happen when a muscle under your lungs called the diaphragm jerks suddenly. At the same time, your vocal cords snap shut—that’s what makes the “hic!” sound.

Hiccups can start when you:

  • laugh too hard

  • eat too fast

  • drink a fizzy drink

But sometimes hiccups just pop up for no clear reason at all.

And even though people try tricks like:

  • holding your breath

  • eating a spoonful of peanut butter

  • breathing into a bag

…there’s no perfect cure.

Hiccups are one of those things we can’t always control.

What Hiccups Teach Us About People

Here’s the thing:

We can’t control other people either.

Sometimes people might:

  • say something mean

  • tease you

  • annoy you on purpose

  • or even bully you

And when that happens, you might feel like paying them back.

But God says:

Don’t fight wrong with more wrong.

Don’t answer insults with insults.

Instead:

  • Be kind.

  • Pray for that person.

  • Ask a grown-up for help if someone is hurting you.

You may not be able to control their choices—

just like you can’t always control hiccups—

but you can control your actions.

And when you choose kindness, God promises blessing.

Let’s Pray Together

Father God, when others are kind—or even mean—help us remember Jesus. He loved everyone, even people who hated Him. Help us show that same love and kindness to others. We love You. Amen.

Lollipop Challenge:

If someone is mean today, try this:

1. Stop and breathe.

2. Don’t pay them back.

3. Say or do something kind instead.

4. Tell a trusted adult if you need help.

That’s how you plant blessings.
