Being a long-distance grandparent is one of the hardest, most beautiful callings. Like my husband and I, maybe you have some grandkids near and some far away. We long to share our faith with them, but... how?

How do you turn that sometimes-awkward video chat into a real, lasting spiritual connection? You get past "How was school?" and then what? It's so hard to know what to say, and we're terrified of sounding preachy, weird, or just boring them.

I've felt this tension so deeply that I wanted to create a simple, stress-free tool for both of us. I'm so excited to share my library of 2-to-3-minute "Lollipop Devotions."

They are designed specifically to be read right over the phone or video chat (we use the Marco Polo app). They take all the guesswork and pressure off your shoulders and just give you the perfect, simple words to say.

Each one follows a powerful, 4-part "recipe":

  1. A Scripture to set the foundation.

  2. A Kid-Friendly, Age-Appropriate Devotion to touch their heart.

  3. A Special Prayer (from you!) to seal the moment.

  4. An Application Question to spark conversation and serve as a launching pad for their own thoughts.

It’s a sweet, simple, and doable way to be an anchor of faith for your grandkids. It's our little "secret" for turning screen time into sacred time and answering God's call on our lives.

Each devotion is an opportunity to support the parents as the primary spiritual teachers in their child’s life. Think of these devotions as a "conversation starter" that the parents can continue long after the call ends. It’s a way for you to be intentional in their training while honoring the sacred role of the mom and dad, helping the whole family grow together in the Gospel.

We’ve placed an example for you at the bottom of this page:

Good morning, grandchildren!

I wish I were with you right now so I could give you a great big hug and tell you how much I love you!

Since I can’t do that, I’ve decided to talk with you for a couple of minutes each morning as you drive to school. Every school day morning, I’ll send you a message, and that will be our special way of staying in touch. I’ll tell you things I’ve learned about God—things I want you to know, too.

“Once Jesus was in a certain place praying.
As he finished, one of his disciples came to him and said,
“Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”
Luke 11:1 NLT

This is when one of the disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray.

When we pray, we’re talking to God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.

When we pray, we’re saying we believe they are real—even though we can’t see or touch them.

We’re also saying that we want them to be our friends, and we want to be their friends, too.

Think about the friends you have at school—you like spending time with them, right? To be good friends with God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, we get to spend time with them by talking to them in prayer.

So today at school, and any time during the day, you can silently pray and talk to them in your mind. Then listen for where they lead your thoughts. Their thoughts will always be positive and loving—toward you and toward others.

Those loving thoughts will bring happiness and joy!

So let them lead you into a day full of joy and fun as you talk with them throughout today.

Let’s pray together:

Father God, Jesus, and Holy Spirit,
Thank You for this day.
We ask that You speak to us throughout today and
fill our hearts and minds with Your loving thoughts
so we can share Your love with those around us.
We love You. Amen.

Our question today is:

When can you talk to God during your day?
